The Blue Lake Centre is an excellent facility close to Canal Flats on the 93/95 highway south. The centre includes summer camp cabins, lodge, extensive trail system of over 100km and small warm-up shelters with firepits.

The trails are open all year for biking, hiking, trail-running and cross-country skiing. They also offer rentals of the cabins for larger groups or the fully equipped Findlay Lodge for up to 10 people.

There is a donation box for using the packed ski trails in winter.

The valley at Canal Flats may not have much snow, but the trails are at least 700 meters higher up, so they have good skiing conditions until the end of March. To get the latest info, email: bluelakeforest@xplorenet.com

Trails that start near the lake include the Main loop of 4.8km with a shelter at the junction of the Purcell trail. Another shelter is located on the Suicide loop which adds another 3km to this loop and a total climb of 240 meters. The Main loop has a nice long downhill section on the way back to the parking lot.

Trail maps are available at the start.

Directions:

Drive south of Invermere, past Fairmont and turn off Highway 93/95 onto Findlay Creek RD, approximately 4 km North of the Canal Flats gas station. Follow the signs for 26 km until you reach Blue Lake Centre. Check all the forks and intersections for Blue Lake signs, there are a number of side roads. The road is plowed all winter by Tembec operations.

See also their map for directions.

After skiing or hiking, visit the nearby Fairmont Hot Springs for a relaxing soak in the mineral hot springs.

In summer the Funtasia-Fairmont Fun Park is a must for a family visit. Located at 4896 Highway 93 at Fairmont, where you will find animals, birds, miniature golf, trails, picnic sites and more. Call 250-345-4511 for more information.

The Findlay Trail as well as the Deer Creek trail are both double set and in good condition with a light snow over them since they were set.
