This is the highest peak in the Capital Reigonal District. It affords beautiful, panoramic views. The GPS includes the main trail to the peak, a loop to Peden Lake, and a diversion to Grass Lake. The GPS also includes a 1.5km bushwacking path for the stuborn who want to head to the peak and don't want to retrace their steps after visting Grass Lake. This later "path" is not for the faint of heart.
The trail steadiy gains elevation. You will cross a few creeks over the course of the trip.
Direct path to the peak is around 14km. With loops, the trip is around 18km.
Turn right off the highway between Victoria and Sooke unto Sooke River Road. The trail starts on your right after approximately 4km. Watch for a gate with a sign stating "no motorized vehicles."

UpsideThis mountain has fantastic views, and its approach is mostly in the forest, making it a great trail for avoiding the summer heat. CommentThe GPS tracks provided wander considerably. But, I hiked its most direct path and my total distance was 18.7km, my total travel time was 4 hours and 15 minutes, and my average speed was 4.7km/h. I lingered on the summit for a while, but you could complete this hike in under five hours.

QuestionHas anyone hiked to Empress Mtn starting from Charters Road (fish hatchery)?
What route would you recommend in & out?
Someone commented on Trailpeak thread that Charters River trail is flooded / is impassable.
Does anyone know if the route is clear as of Spring 2016?
ANSWERS are in this forum: Empress Mtn via Charters River

DownsideI attempted this hike on February 8, 2015. There is now a dam at the exact junction where the trail crosses the Todd Creek, making it completely impassable. The river was about 4 feet deep here, too much to wade through. Even though it had been raining the past week, it doesn't look like the water would be shallow enough even in the summer. CommentAttempt one of the other three routes to the summit.

UpsideNot far from the city and has some good views once you get to the top! DownsideLong and boring with not much to see all the way to the top. The trail itself is a bit confusing with very little markers especially at the forks. If this is your first time, be prepared to get lost a time or two. CommentWell, this was not our most exciting hike by far. The trail up is quite boring, with very little to get excited about. It does change once at the top, which is the best part of this hike!
