As with all multi-day thru-hikes you will need a car at the end of the trail to take you back to your start point, or a friend to drop you off and pick you up. The trail follows the South Mountain crest for most of its distance. The trail is well maintained and well marked. Most of the trail is flat, but provides great views.
The car shuttle requires a lot of driving:
US 15 north from Frederick for 20 miles
Left near Thurmont onto MD 550 continuing to the entrance to Fort Ritchie, where, a short distance later bear left, cross under railroad tracks, and turn right onto Pen Mar Rd. Enter PA, cross over the railroad tracks and leave one car in the small pullout on the right.
The second car:
Take US 340 to the southwest 15 miles
Left onto Keep Tryst Rd.
Keep straight when Sandy Hook Rd comes in from the right. Start your journey by leaving the car at the designated area alongside the road.
