For a very scenic, long, and rigorous hike try this one-way trek on the Bull Run-Occoquan Trail. Located about 25 miles southwest of DC, BROT is the only nearby, lightly-used trail on which you can hike in roughly the same direction for 18 miles. The trail follows the valley carrying Bull Run and the Occoquan River to the Potomac River.
It passes four state parks, hemlock stands, and springtime bluebells along the way.
From Centreville, take US 29 S to Bull Run Post Office Rd./VA 621. Turn L and follow to Bull Run Regional Park entrance. End: From Occoquan, take VA 123 N 5 mi. Turn L on Hampton Rd. and drive 1.5 mi. to Fountainhead Regional Park entrance.
