The Summit of Mount Rainier is 14,410 Feet. The trail passes crevasses on the Ingraham Glacier, both visible and covered. This trail is not recommended for the intermediate hiker. Knowledge of glacier travel, rope systems, and rescue pulleys is necessary, as well as other experienced travel companions. Via Disappointment Cleaver, a strenuous 4 to 5 hour hike with 3 rest breaks is necessary to reach the summit. Gore Tex, 2 pairs of heavy mittens, and at least a 650 fill down parka are necessary. Crampons, helmets, ropes, and ice axes are also recommended.
From Camp Muir, traverse the Cowlitz Clavier to the pass over Catherdral Rocks. Traverse the Ingraham Flats under Disappointment Cleaver rockfall and ascend Disappointment Cleaver. Note: some mixed climbing techniques useful here. From the top of Disappointment Cleaver ascend the upper snowfields to the Bergschrund. Use extreme caution crossing this final band of crevasses high on the mountain to reach the summit crater. From the summit crater, traverse to Columbia Crest and enjoy the view !!!
