The Devils Garden in Arches National Park is one of my favourite hikes. On this hike you will have a chance to see eight arches and one rock spire. Three of the arches are very easy to get to and you do get to see two more from a distance. Once you get to Landscape arch you have a chance to take the primitive trail to the other arches and to visit two arches (Navajo and Partition) up close. This trail is fantastic. Narrow ledges, slick rock, awesome scenery and less people all add to the enjoyment. Total round trip is 7 kms and takes a couple of hours to do. We didn’t do the loop portion, we just did this as a linear hike, so we missed seeing the last one, Private arch. Also make sure to visit the bathroom before you leave, there are very few places to go and going off trail destroys the vegetation.

Start off from the parking area and pick up the trail. The first two arches to visit are on your right, Tunnel and Pine Tree Arches. Get back on the trail and keep going. In a little while you come across Landscape Arch. This is the famous 6 foot thick arch. If you look to your right you will probably see a bunch of people going up some steep slick rock, this where you will be going. Keep following the trail, you will come to the primitive trail sign, go past this and start your ascent. Once you make it to the top, you will see the trail heads of to the left. This gives you a chance to visit Navajo and Partition Arches. Once done snapping some pictures, head back on the trail. In a little while the trail gets interesting and you will have to go along a narrow rock ridge. Once down from here you will almost be at Double O arch. Make your way through the small O and go up a bit for you picture of the arch. Once down, head back and pick up the trail to the Dark Angel. It isn’t long to get here, but if you have had enough then don’t bother, it really isn’t anything special. Either head back or move on to the Dark Angel.

Directions:

Make your way to Arches National Park. From the entrance station make your way to the end of the road, about 30 kms. You will see a sign for the Devils Garden Trailhead, park here.

Accommodations:

A lot of people hiking and biking in the MOAB area stay at condos managed by www.moabutahlodging.com, speak with Andrea. They offer a range of in town homes and condos.

Downside Can be crowded between the trail head and Double O arch. Once you're on the primitive section, though, it gets a lot quieter.
