Aztec Butte Trail in Canyonlands National Park is a fantastic short hike. You will have 360 views of the entire area and you will be able to see up close ancient Puebloan granaries. Going up the slick rock is steep but well worth it. Trip time is around 1 hour and it is about a 3 km trip.
From the parking lot pick up the well marked trail. In a few minutes you will come to a spur on your left; avoid this for now and do it on the way home. Keep going and in a little while you will come to the steep slick rock. Follow the rock cairns and make your way up. Once you get up to the plateau you will make a left and head on the plateau for a bit until you go down and make your way under the overhang of the plateau. You will come across numerous intact granaries as you make your way along. Keep going and the trail will eventually go back on the plateau and makes its way back to where you came up onto the plateau at the start. Make your way down the slick rock. Now when you get to the spur on your right, go ahead and do this trail now. This little loop also takes in some awesome scenery and you get a chance to see how high up you where on the plateau. Once done, head back to the spur and make your way back to your car.
Make your way to Canyonlands National Park and go in the Island in the Sky entrance way. From I70 it is 73 kms to the visitor centre. From the visitor centre head 10 kms to the intersection and veer right. Head along here for maybe 1 kms, look for the Aztec Butte parking area on your right.
