The Broken-Top loop trail in Craters of the Moon National Monument is a great short hike through lava country. It’s about 3 kms long and takes about an hour. A pamphlet can be obtained at the trail head pointing out points of interest. This trail has everything you have ever learned for geology class; pumice rock, lava caves, pahoehoe and Aa lava.
From the parking area, pick up the trail and head a clockwise direction. The first thing you will notice is the huge pumice rocks that weigh almost nothing! Your next stop of interest is the Big Sing Overlook; once done make your way back to the main trail. In a little while you will be heading out to the lava caves. The caves aren’t long but are good fun; hope you brought a flashlight! Once out of the caves head back to the trail and make your way to your car.
Make your way to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Take the scenic drive and park at point of interest #6 (tree Molds).
