Silver creek leads to Outpost Mountain, with no creek crossings, just a bit of bushwhacking. The top reveals views of the Shakwak Trench, Kloo Lake, Kluane lake, Slims valley and Vulcan glacier. Silver creek valley is attractive with hanging glaciers.
Follow the creek to a curve at 8.5km (UTM 60-46 Jarvis Ck) until the glaciers come into view. Shortly after the curve is a vegetated island with a clear creek flowing into Silver Creek from Outpost Mntn. This is the best campsite along the bottom of the creek. There are 2 sandy cutbanks with jagged rocks poking through the vegetation. The creek flowing between these cutbanks is the one to follow to ascend Outpost. (UTM 59-45 at 9km).
Bushwhacking up this creek is difficult for 15 minutes. The creek splits and the left-hand fork soon opens into a 4-lane gravel highway which leads to the alpine on Outpost. Once in the alpine, take the ridge to the right and follow it as high as you wish to go. It will not take you to the summit, as the scree is loose near the top. Continue around the north side of the mountain and ascend to the plateau by the back side.
From the top Kluane Lake, Plateau, Sheep mntn, Red Castle ridge and Mt Decoeli come into view.
Drive south on the Alaska hwy from Sheep mountain info center 13.2 km and turn right. There is a small parking area. Start on the north side of the creek, as the south side washes into a high bank. Crossing the creek is too dangerous. Silver creek is dark and muddy, so carry water, there is none for 3-4 hours.
