Like Isobel Lake, this hike is also in the Lac du Bois area with its sweeping grassland vistas, spectacular cliffs and canyons, cool, dry forests, secret ponds and small lakes. Nestled in the rolling land of this protected area, it gives home to a variety of winged inhabitants. The trail is easily accessible, the trip to the lake from the parking area being about 3 km.
Start by heading east and down a dirt road. After approximately 15 minutes of walking, you'll come to a trail branching off north-east. Take this route, and you'll soon get to Long Lake.
From Kamloops, after crossing the Thompson River, drive north on Tranquille Rd., continue on 8th St., and drive up towards Bachelor Hills. Zero your odometer at the intersection of Westsyde Road and Bachelor Hills. Drive north through Bachelor Hills and into the Lac du Bois area. At about 7.2 km, turn right off the main gravel road, and park at this clearing.
Note that there are many stretches of private land within the boundaries of the park and adjacent to it. Specific written permission must be obtained from the landowner before carrying out any activities on private property. Also most activities in Lac du Bois Grasslands Park require a permit and/or authorization from BC Parks, since the area is so sensitive to disturbances. Check the BC parks website before going.
